We gather together as a family of faith on this the 9th Sunday after Pentecost.
Again, we remember that we are “after” the Day of Pentecost. In the Easter season we are “of” Easter. We are Easter people, united with people around the world by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel means “Good News” of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We are Easter people.
Today our Summer Sermon Series continues on with the book Just Like Jesus by Pastor Max Lucado. This week we look at having a Hope Filled Heart. Jesus models this incredible hope in the midst of what the Lord went through in the last days of His life. After praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus says “Let us go on.” He knew God’s plan was to be fulfilled.
Jesus feeds the 5000 today with bread and fish, with plenty left over. Jesus is our Bread of Life and fills us to the full daily with hope! Let us have hope-filled hearts and be just like Jesus.
Introduction
Today is the first of five Sundays with gospel readings from John 6, the first four of which focus on Jesus as bread of life. Today Jesus feeds thousands of people with five loaves and two fish. What we have, what we bring to Jesus’ table, seems like it is not nearly enough to meet all the needs we see around us. But it is not the adequacy of our supplies or our skills that finally makes the difference: it is the power of Jesus working in the littlest and least to transform this world into the world God desires, a world where all the hungry are satisfied.
