Bible Stories

Today is another exciting festival Sunday in the life of the church!

Holy Trinity Sunday celebrates the Doctrine of the Trinity honoring God the Creator, Jesus the Redeemer and the Holy Spirit the Sustainer. Our ELCA church understands God in three persons as described in the Bible. God is described as Father, Jesus as the Son, and in the Book of Acts we hear about the descent of the Holy Spirit.

The doctrine of the Trinity was first formulated among the early Christians of the Church as an attempt to understand the relationship between Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit. In simplistic terms (such as those preferred by your Pastor) it is knowing we have 3 times the love! God loves us as God the Creator, Jesus the Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit the Sustainer.

Another way I have come to understand the Trinity is by water, steam and ice. Each of these have the same basic characteristics of water, but look and feel different. The bottom line, on this Festival Sunday, is that God loves us always. The Spirit will now move us into the Pentecost Season, as we witness the Spirit move in, with and through us!  Amen!

Introduction

When we say God is the triune God, we are saying something about who God is beyond, before, and after the universe: that there is community within God. Our experience of this is reflected in Paul’s words today. When we pray to God as Jesus prayed to his Abba (an everyday, intimate parental address), the Spirit prays within us, creating between us and God the same relationship Jesus has with the one who sent him.
