Friends:
This past Sunday, after services, I was invited to join the Altar Guild (and friends) for lunch at Rick's Boatyard Cafe! It was an outstanding experience, great food, and atmosphere. I told the AG (Chris Willman, Jamie Shake, and Amanda Hunter) I give God thanks and praise for their work "behind the scenes. We have so, so many who work for the Lord in and outside of our building to make things happen for Sunday morning.
The Altar Guild, if not familiar, are the ones who set up the altar for services, light the candles making sure they have wicks or oil, change the hymn number board and move/change the banners and paraments (colored cloth that hangs on the altar and pulpit). They also prepare Holy Communion! It is important work, and they are interested in finding one or two more to help serve on Altar Guild. Like all service to the Lord, it is minimal time and maximum joy!
I say this on the eve of Labor Day weekend which was first held 140 years ago in 1882. President Grover Cleveland signed into law the first Monday in September/Labor Day in 1894! Join me in giving thanks to God for the many who have labored over the many years to make our country great. We pray for those who will have to work on Labor Day, and we especially give God thanks for the many who work behind the scenes to help keep our congregation working. As our Bible urges us "Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances..." (1st Th. 5: 16-18).
